its really noisy electro tech type stuff with plenty of vocals..well the first little bit is anyway.
Criticism: watch your levels. this is wayyyyyy to distorted to be enjoyable. its one thing i see dj's do A LOT. sorry, better luck next time.

one things for sure. recording your mixes and listening to them over and over is very very good for learning from your mistakes. i can probably attribute the bulk of my improvement to how many mixes i've hammered out and critisized

i couldn't agree more! before i "release" a mix, i will listen to it at least five times and sometimes more and make sure its up to par.

actuallllly. i kept my levels at 0 the entire time... i think the mic was turned up, or maybe the boost was turned on. either way, it's like my second recorded mix ever......im glad youre all checking for sound quality, i'm sure all the bugs will be worked out regarding levels very soon... it would be nice if you listened to some of the mixing tooo tho :P

cory, i'll swing by one day and check your setup out, it could be that the output of your mixer is clipping somewhere and you just don't notice cause the level meter is showing your individual channels, not your main output.
edit : Also, in regards to the mixing, it's hard for one to cocentrate on that when there are other underlaying factors. The key to a good mix is the overall feel. blending and beatmatching are one aspect, but mixing levels properly, are another important factor as well. For this reason i always listen to the two tracks put together in my headphones before mixing in, to make sure the levels are not clashing with one another and it will mix well.

from what i could tolerate, the mixing and tracks sounded decent. but when the overall sound quality is terrible, whats the point of listening to it? if the sound quality was fine, and the mixing was terrible, i wouldnt be pointing out how good the sound quality was... :alien:

sound forge is crap. the only thing worth recording in is wavelab, or logic/peak if you are a mac user.

Not everyone has a Mac ... what do you guys recommend for PC?

sound forge isn't all that bad is it?
i use cool edit 2.0 for recording mixes....and standardizing all my tracks...in f sharp... ok just for recording.

It really boils down to how good your soundcard is.. For all intentive purposes soundforge is just as good as any other one. Im pretty sure most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference in the recording program as long as you kept your levels the same.

thats of course assuming the tracks you are standardizing have a harmonic key :P

well yes, however each soundcard possesses a tonal quality too. Actually i noticed a tonal quality between mac and pc even. Every bit of circuitry and software adds its own to the end sound.

exactly.
I used Soundforge on the PC and I use Audacity on the Mac. Audacity is a free open source program that runs like Soundforge, its damn good for what you'd need it for.

I think theres a version of Audacity for PC too, I think anyway.
Sound Forge works fine for recording but the program is a little intense just for that purpose.
I use cool edit myself.

There IS a version of Audacity for P.C. and its a good program for sure. I personally use Adobe Audition 2.0 but either one works great.

pretty much any simple wav recorded will do the job. Just be sure you encore it 128+
I do 192 nowadays.

Ok, so here is where crappy sounding mixes come in, and where software is key.
Dithering.
Soundforge has a fucking shitty ass dithering algorhythm, so does audacity, So when you compress the audio from a 24bit Waveform to a 16bit mp3, it kills the headroom and digital artifacts are found. This is why for pc users i recommend wavelab. Oh and please god tell me you are recording at 24 bit, you may think it doesn't make a difference since you are mixing with 16 bit audio but the extra headroom will equal to clarity in your end product. Also, i try to d nothing less than 320 these days, cause the extra space isn't that much and this also leads to a better sounding mix in the end.

you cant if its destorted...
what are you inputing into forgive my technical terms :p it shouldnt be mic that will distort like a son of a bitch well in my experience anyways. use the line in input and audacity. thats what i use if yer using a pc any ways. yer mixer should have a rec.out output in my expereince running your master through the computer doesent work well i find it so much easier to have every thing the way it is and your rec. out to be plugged into your line in select it on the device drop down on audacity click record and have at 'er. and make sure yer gains aint to high because it doesent matter how much activity your mixer has its whats on the screen what counts you should see a nice wave going up and down like a heart moniter, not a big block.
make sure your input volume is turned down also i keep mine inbetween the 2nd and 3rd notch if your going to be usuing audacity its the one with the little mic beside it. then you have all control with just your gains and usuing yer master you can turn it up as loud as you like without having distortion issues.
some one is prolly gonna put my foot in my mouth but thats how its always been for me and i have good sound on my demos... havent learned how to make tracks yet though is it doable with audacity?

actually.. tim basically has it right. good job son!
the only thing you are missing is to normalize your mix at the end to bring it up to peak volume which sounds fine provided you kept the same overall level throughout your mix.
