PIONEER BRIDGES THE GAP BETWEEN COMPUTER JOCKS AND CD JOCKS WITH THE NEW
CDJ-400 DIGITAL TURNTABLE

LONG BEACH (November 7, 2007) – Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. Professional Sound and Visual Division, the leader in Pro DJ products and the innovator of the CD turntable, unveiled the latest addition to its family of CD turntables, the CDJ-400. The CDJ-400 combines a sampling of features found in the different levels of Pioneer’s CDJ series with the simplicity of a standard CD turntable, including USB1 integration and MP3 playback, MIDI support, scratching capability, scratch jog effect and a variety of looping functions.

“We’re making it versatile and easy to get more control of digital music mixing by developing products like the CDJ-400,” said Matt Dever, vice
president for Pioneer’s Professional Sound and Visual Division. “We’ve made the player very affordable for DJs. The CDJ-400 is packed with features that are ideal for different levels of DJs, from the ‘newbies’ to the professional DJs who want to better manipulate their DJ computer
software.”

USB Integration and MP3 Playback-
The CDJ-400’s cosmetic design is simple and compact yet elegant with all of its various controls and features located directly on top of the unit. A
USB port found on the face of the player allows DJs to play their MP3 music collection from a wide variety of portable music devices such as thumb
drives, MP3 players or external hard drives. With the use of a multi-function selector knob/button and its large, bright, dot-matrix LCD display, locating and accessing of files from these types of music devices as well as MP3 music files on CD and CD-R/RW through the CD slot are done with a turn and press of the knob.

DJ Software Compatibility and MIDI Control-
With more of today’s DJs utilizing different DJ software for their performances, the CDJ-400 is also equipped with a PC mode. In this mode,
the CDJ-400 is a native controller for software such as Pioneer DJS2 computer software and SERATO® Scratch LIVE3. For example, the movement of the pitch slider on the CDJ-400 can control the pitch slider on the computer software and no timecode CD is required for audio control. The player can also act as a MIDI controller where the user can assign virtually every button on the player to trigger functions of various DJ software programs.

World’s First Scratch Jog Effect-
A highlight and an advancement of the CDJ-400 is its scratching capability. In addition to traditional “vinyl” mode scratching, Pioneer implemented the
World’s First Scratch Jog Effect. Three highlighted buttons, each assigned to a special effect, Bubble, Trans and Wah, creates unique scratching sound
effects that can be enabled by the DJ on the fly. A “hold” button was also added to retain the different effects throughout the session or until its
release, which can also be triggered at any point of play.

Additional features in the CDJ-400 include:
- Digital Loop functions: A variety of loops can be created for additional audio effects.

- Beat Loop: Automatically creates four beat loop based on the beats per minute (BPM) of music currently being played.

- Loop Divide: Rhythmically divides the loop in halves to create different patterns.

- Hot Loop: Restarts the loop seamlessly from its entry without interruption of the music.

- Digital Jog Break: In CD mode the CDJ-400 contains three effects, Jet, Roll and Wah, which further enhances the audio by simply rotating the jog dial. The same buttons for the Scratch Jog Effect are assigned to the Digital Jog Break which are accessible at any point of play.

- Tempo Control: Four tempo modes, ±6%, ±10%, ±16% and WIDE4, provide additional speed control with a resolution of 0.02% in the 6% range

- Cue/Loop Points: Up to 10 cue/loop points per disc, for up to 920 discs can be stored in memory

- Jog Indicator: A break in the red halo illumination around the jog wheel provides instantaneous feedback to the DJ

- Customizable Jog Wheel: The top of the jog wheel can be removed enabling the user to add their own customized image

- Digital Output: A digital output is available for a direct connection for clearer sound to a connected mixer

- Resume Function: The function takes effect if a CD is ejected accidentally. Once the DJ re-inserts the disc, it automatically starts playing from exactly the point where it stopped

The CDJ-400 will be available in January 2008 with a manufacturer suggested retail price of $750.00 US.

..wowee i cant fkn wait for these bad babies to come out. that price is insanely low compared to the cdj1000's...with more/better features...makes me goes wtfzors! :) regardless, a pair of those is in order for the new year when they out:D

One difference i do notice between these and the 1000 mk3s is the 1000s have an adjustable jog wheel sensitivity which is kinda nice to have. The price difference should more then make up for it tho.

Any speculation as to whether this will replace the 800 line? Will there be an 800 MK3? If so, they are going to have to price it differently as not to cannibalize its own market. If it contains the same features as the 400, it'll be basically the same thing but with a larger platter, no? The large platter on the 800 counts for A LOT, but people aren't going to want to spend a few hundred more for the new version of something that was way cheaper before. They'll just get the small platter 400, or go all out and get a 1000.

To me this looks like a product aimed to take the 800s out of the market leaving only the 400 and 1000s left in the higher end of the pioneer cdj lineup. I'm not sure why Pioneer would want to kill off the 800, other than it perhaps not making them enough money (though with all the features of the new 400 I can't see them having any wider of a profit margin either).

you start playing a style that actually sounds good on 3 or 4 decks?;)

i'm really starting to dig progressive-ish breaks. and those work very well on 3. i've been doing a lot more sampling than anythign lately. and being able to load up a bunch of samples and acapellas on a usb drive and plug it in and go is just pure awesome.

Wow, i remember Grudge saying they were badass when he was explaining them to me but i wasn't expecting them to be this badass! Definetly thinking about going with these rather than the 1000's :)

what are your reasons? I'm debating on which model to get. At first it was between the 800's and 1000's but now the 400's have entered into the picture.

There are too many models out there :P

Can only afford 1, especially if it's a 1000 which is actually what I'm leaning towards. It has all of the features I'm interested in, granted it has a hefty price but with only getting 1 deck at a time it should be easier to handle.

God bless Serato and the ability to mix with only deck :)

Ain't that the truth .. One of my tech's is down .. kinked tonearm. I find it easier mixing w one deck actually. Just remember to hit input reverse before you take the needle off.

Well the 400's do just about everything the 1000's do PLUS they have USB capability which is badass in my opinion, and they are only a fraction of the cost... I'd much rather pay $850 per deck rather than $1400 lol much easier on the wallet hehe, i mean i'm going to make sure i try the 400's before i buy em to make sure the feel is the same as the 1000's... i hope the plates arent super loose on them cause i like how the 1000's are tighter, but ya those are my reasons :D

Chances are the platter will be pretty tight, Pioneer tightened up the 800 MK2's platter quite a bit so they may do the same with the 400. If only the 400 had Hot Cues then the decision would be made...

Old topic - but I finally had a chance to use these last night and am quite happy that I did not purchase them. Sure they have some interesting features, but overall I did not enjoy them. The biggest drawback I think would be that the platter is just waaaay too small. has anyone else used / purchased these? Do you like them?

LSDave

i used these for about 2 days. and they work REALLY well. I think they are a GREAT solution for someone on a budget. JoeyP has a pair of these, and thats what hes using to make all those bad ass mixes hes been putting out.

Your obviously used to a large platter so an adjustment would have to be made. But im sure using them for a few days would change your opinion.

Im gonna wait til they come out with an 1000MK4 with USB compatibility.

the only way id get suckered into getting cdjs is if the mk4's had a real lcd waveform display, something similar to serato or traktors. So you can actually "read" a track accuratly. The waveform displays on the mkIII's is garbage.

also it would seem logical to use an lcd display cause they are cheap enough now and if you are bringing an 8gb usb stick you need a real display to find your music on that thing.

ya, bring on the MK4 so that the MK3's price will drop and I can afford another! :)

Dave - you're probably right. I was thrown into a gig with no time to practice on them before hand. After using them for a while though I'm sure I'd get used to them. But that said, they're still pretty small for my liking. I love having a large platter.

i have a pair of these on loan from long/McQuede for the past 4 months.. i have NOTHING to compare them too because i'm new to mixing.. but they work great for me.. not having to load CD's is big plus... using flash drives live might not look as sexy?! uhhh.. but super easy for moving over new songs etc.. the USB ports on the back for MIDI controller hookup would work well for those using those kind of rigs as well

LSDave

Another amazing feature with these CDj's is if you have a pair of them you can use each CDJ's asio sound card to output audio from playing decks in traktor to your external mixer. then use its midi functionality to control the decks in traktor. version 1.2 of Traktor Scratch Pro will support HID functionality so the display on the CDJ will work with traktor as well.

another advantage over the 800's and 1000's.

the MIDI over USB is nice yeah I finally tested that out in Traktor Scratch last month, actually works without drivers under WinXP. XP dectects em as USB audio devices. Also the USB can be used with regular external hard drives as well.. i'm doing just that for my first DJ gig ( a house party) on Friday. They just have to be formatted as the FAT32 file system type ; )

I'll definitely be buying out the least on my rental with L&M soon, great lil units
