Soundwave Entertainment presents...
DEADMAU5 : LIVE PERFORMANCE
www.myspace.com/deadmau5
In this world of ever-evolving genres, sounds and trends, the word phenomenon is rarely if ever used, unless of course you are the hottest talent in the world of electronic music and your name is DEADMAU5. It’s hard to put your finger on exactly why this has all happened so fast. The simple answer would be behind the music; a sound that’s hard to describe, and one that transcends various genres of music, flirting with techno and minimal whilst hinting at tech house, trance and electro.
There is the concept of his new live show that has recently been incorporated into his sets across the globe. Operating off a laptop with a Lemur, Anomaly and visual effects, this full live stage show is set to change the face of live DJ performances as we know it. And there is the tailor made giant Mau5head complete with powerful strobe lighting eyes. This mind blowing piece of costume is worn to maximum effect during his live shows; yet another addition to the ever increasing aura that surrounds this unique young artist.

Heading out on what will probably be the most defining two months of his still-young-shit life, the UK electro producer/marauder Burns is slated to be the opening act on the North American leg this fall of Deadmau5's tour. So, yeah, you get Deadmau5's live antics with the over-your-head production of Burns, the illest kid you haven't given enough credit to. Everyone else has though, with Annie Mac, Calvin Harris, A-Trak, Erol Alkan, et al. biting at his bit. If you're not pre-convinced that it's a necessity to catch one of these shows, Burns has already released two tremendously invigorating EPs and has a third, Teknique, on the way come October 5. It's spaced-out, far-reaching electro house with moments of hard breaks and floating, airy anthems built on a seemingly endless knowledge of pop.

Honestly, it seems like every thread I go in someone's complaining about sound. Seriously??!! Really??!! You gotta a better deal going at your house-bring it! In the meantime enjoy the fucking talent that someone else has paid for you to see-whether they make their money or not! Really!! Be thankful! We're lucky anyone has the balls to bring some of these people in, gain/loss or whatnot.
If you don't like the sound, slap your earphones on at your computer and have a grand ol' time. Otherwise I'm gonna be kicking it at these shows I wouldn't otherwise see in WPG...thats all.
Hate me/love me for it...but its true. Until I hear any your names in such excitement in a city you've never been to, can we suck it up on the "sound issues" Please? Really?

I think sound is definitely important. I take a lot of pride in the sound system at Republic. Other than Canadinns I dont think any other clubs really pay attention to the quality of their sound.
The last couple of sound problems we've had at Republic have all have been addressed. We actually added a couple of subs and more room fills so the room sounds better than ever!

especially when its a headliner; you need good sound quality to fully appreciate the performer's talent.

I totally agree with you, but it seems like half the time, I'm hearing more bitching than enjoying. When push comes to shove, I'd rather hear them live with "sound issues" than not at all. The complaints are a private deal between you and the owner as far as I'm concerned-but thats just me.

Not me. I left Deadmau5 halfway through at Hi-Fi because the sound was so shitty. Piercing high's that cause all sorts of ear damage and muddy bass is incredibly obnoxious. Spend a few weekends at some of western canada's bigger festivals who typically have PK Sound rigs and you'll probably change your opinion on the value of sound quality. I know I've plugged pk sound a few times, but they really did spoil me and teach me good quality sound's impact on the value of a party.
I'm definitely excited to hear the new sound at republic!

They design and manufacture their own speakers. Their knowledge of acoustics is top notch, to the point where you can be standing right in front of the speakers, music pounding, and still have a regular volume conversation. There is attention to detail, especially in the high range frequencies, thus making their setup safer for ears too.
Also I'm told the people who go on the road for setups are really fun and have a good sense of humor!

"There are many variables in producing a proper electronic music event. Some things are obvious: a proper space with quality sound and engaging visuals are part of the physics that create a comfortable environment for the crowd. If, for instance, the sound system isn't properly dialed in to the acoustics of the space, the performer, regardless of his or her talent, is going to sound like crap. The result is a lethargic dance floor and an angry performer who will not only expect to get paid but will never come back."

exact opposite for me. getting drunker means me having more fun, so i just want to party and forget about taking videos. sometimes i also take more videos while i'm sober because i'm not in the mood to dance, and i feel uncomfortable standing around not doing anything, so i do it just to keep busy.

Wow was it wayyy packed in there tonight! on a Tuesday too. All in all a good show/night. I must say though, I was a little disappointed with his track selection after about an hour of his set. but other than that I had fun meeting a couple of new mixhardians, so i guess that made up for it lol
HI Octane
09-30-2009, 02:10 AM
pretty stellar sets by both burns and deadmau5. i think deadmau5 could have kept the energy going a little better by starting out with the techno, tech house, and tribal, rather than putting it right in the middle. it worked very well when he played hifi, so i was a little surprised to hear most of the electro house bangers first. he did, however, leave most of the proggy stuff for the end, which i thought was ok, but again, it would have worked better if he still had the energy going from the electro tracks.
i loved how all of the effects and layering and stuff sounded so natural, as if they were part of the tracks to begin with.
burns was a very good opener; i could really see why he was chosen to tour with him. the majority of his set was GREAT, but then it went downhill near the end with some REALLY cheezy tracks. my guess was that he did this so as to not overshadow the headliner's opening.
the sound system is AWESOME! great job with that Soundwave! was great to hear the djs on something that allowed the audience to fully appreciate the talents of the artists.
great night overall! i was stunned by how many people came out on a tuesday, and it was great to see so many of you out. was also great to finally meet mahalliner!

Told you Mixhardians and I guess the rest of Winnipeg love to party all the time lol. Defintely agree with HI Octane that the energy build up was sorta whacky. For a good chunk of his set I was just chillin, which is cool if his set was a 4-5 hours, but it was only 2 so wish he kept the energy up for pretty much the whole thing.
I tried to find mahalliner, but the place was packed like a muthafucker. Which now I regret not trying harder since it seems like everyone met everyone else through him -_- Props to that girl who made her own mau5 head, and then got it signed.
One thing that surprised me was that I managed to get some decent shots of him on my shatty iPhone cam and an autographed shirt. I think he left before he got to everyone which is sort of a bummer. Pics up on my flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/merry-beth/sets/72157622487501692/
All in all a good night. Thanks Stephen!
I was a little surprised to taht he did not leave the bangers until closer to the end.
I must say props to teh sound guys this time around. They definitly had their shiz together this time.

Funny thing too, in regards to the opening DJ thread, he mentioned that HIS opening DJ (Hollywood Hype) was just throwing down bangers. He was like "At 10:30 he's playing this?" He was not hard done by it at all, though, he was moreso observing. A lot of what people listen to and download these days is simply harder in general, so it makes sense. Although he did say that when he opens his track selection is more to get a crowd into things rather than bringing the thunder right fro the get-go. But in the end he said a DJ should play what they like playing, and that's the main point.
And yeah, good sound yesterday, especially on the dancefloor. Could use a speaker or two aimed into the corners though, in my opinion.
As for Deadmau5, it's not totally my thing, I was somewhat bored with the track selection too, but it was all in line with his own tracks anyways, so I wasn't surprised - I'm just not a massive Deadmau5 fan, I only really like a few of his tracks to begin with, and his live set reflected that to me.
Was I the only one that noticed he had the exact same tshirt and hat on as he did at hi-fi last year?
Just as observation
Wicked job packing the place on a tues night guys

Thanks Stephen!
i think i saw you... were you dancing near the back the whole time?

Could be sponsor gear. I know Dow Jones was required to sport Circa shoes when he was with them, and now with Reebox he's gotta sport their gear at all his gigs.

I took some shots last night.. not as close to the front of the stage though. If you've got an iphone add the 'NightCamera' app it uses the built-in gyro on the iphone to ONLY snap the shot when it detects stability so it won't take any shots with jaggy biz. Works great

I'd have to agree with previous posts about this set layout... He could have prepped it abit better. But oh well, it was still fucking killer. I didn't expect him to be that good.

I also had problems with the flow. First 45 minutes or so were good. Progressed nicely and the energy was high. Then it dropped off and kinda built up for a song or so and dropped off again. Kinda hard to follow IMO.

In my opinion Burns killed. He played way more material that's not all over the blogs and his set progression seemed to have much more flow. It's understandable that Deadmau5 would play his own tunes - that's what people want to hear but it was a bit weird he opened with the heavy heavy. To be honest, I didn't stay to hear his progression, but I was curious as to where he'd take his set.
Burns though, is a stand up dood. Lotek and I were chatting with him before his set...looking forward to hearing more.
Just got this from Linus Love too:
BURNS has also been extra busy in the studio turning out mixes for Ladyhawke, Frankmusik and Jack Splash feat Missy Elliot with amazing results. Hope to be able share some of them soon.
I'll hopefully have some photos on Manalogue.com tonight.

Funny story, well for me anyway. I thought I might be some issues taking photos of Deadmau5 (even though I had a photopass) so I tried to snap a few shots of his setup before he got on stage. Sure enough Lotek and I got the boot. Then when we were on the right side of the stage the bouncers made us leave that area because Heinekin paid for that area. Lame. hahaha.
